Dolphin & Mischeif

Meet Dolphin and Mischief, twin Herreshoff Newport 29s with a rich and incredibly impressive backstory.

Contracted in 1913 and built in 1914, these sailboats were designed for the amateur owner and ideal for shorthand sailing. They were commissioned on the same day by two sisters as gifts for their teenage sons. The sister ships were originally gaff-rigged cruisers but were converted to their current Bermuda rigs in 1934.

After completing construction in Bristol, Dolphin found her home Stonington and Mischief down in the Chesapeake, where both boats went on to become prolific racers - Dolphin notably taking the title of the "winningest boat in Long Island Sound". Yet despite over a century of sailing, it wasn't until 2019 that these vessels met on the same racecourse.
